Use touch truthfully

Holding hands with your partner can reduce activity in brain regions associated with physical pain and discomfort, per new research in Pain. And in a separate study involving women in labor, significant others had to be physically clutching their hand, not just sitting next to them, for this simple trick to work. But it’s not merely the skin-to-skin touch that prompts your body to release natural pain erasers, says Lopez-Sola–there’s an emotional factor as well. She adds, “Do you trust this person? Have you recently had a right? The more in sync you are, the more pain-relief effect you’ll feel.
