ACT TWO: CHOOSE CAREFULLY

Slick MD offices and something as simple as a medic wearing a crisp uniform can offer a higher chance of treatment efficacy, studies show. “A fancy degree, a renowned institution, an expensive drug–we’re conditioned to expect these to be the best, and research shows they do work better as a result,” says Walter A. Brown, MD, a psychiatrist at Brown University and author of The Placebo Effect in Clinical Practice. Of course, some health-care choices may be slightly out of your control (um, insurance!) but you can still up your observation of the minutiae anywhere.
